I do have windows XP home edition. One of the first things I tried to do is make a backup of the OS and files. The XP help files tell you this..

===========================================================
Feature: Backup
When to use it: When you need to restore a version of a data file that you saved using Backup.
What it does: Restores files from backups.
Available on: All versions of Windows XP. By default, this utility is not installed on Windows XP Home Edition. You can install it from the Windows XP Home Edition compact disc, however.
For more information, see Backing up files and folders.

I tried to install this feature from the XP disc but was unsuccessful. So I bought Ghost 2003 instead. I have made several posts on this thread on the subject matter, and you can search those. Here is one of them.

You need a CD read/writer, or an extra hard drive, or a new partition to make an image of your PC software and files.

It is a worthwhile thing to do. The XP "restore" facility is often useless as updates often wipe out your restore points (you get a note in the update that says "once installed this update cannot be removed"). Not a nice feature if it screws up your PC, and I know that and have been there.

Earlier versions of Ghost are available, and will almost certainly work. You often get a version with your motherboard install software.

Also try searching "this subject only" on the word "image"

/edit. Ghost 2003 is fairly cool. Without having to be a PC super nerd you can do lots of things. The utilities facility, for example, allows you to restore a particular file from an image back up painlessly. Backed up data and OS in the form of an image file is a must have in my book.
