This is hardly news to the Democrats, who have never said the fear is not real.

I'm beginning to think we're a nation of wusses.

This is the crux. Everybody can have a slip that plays against the existing perception, because it won't be picked up. But woe betide you if your slip plays to the existing perceptions.
