Chuck, a good article. What caught my eye is the fact that "Google was not being used from Morocco to the border of India. No a single light." This goes to show that the Arab countries are not that tech savvy and hence have a very backward lifestyle.

Now let us take the case of India. India is the second largest Muslim country. In spite of that we do not hear of Islamic terrorism in India. The terrorists tried to enter India. They bombed the Indian Parliament building etc. But they were soon put down by the very Muslims who continue to serve in the Indian army, the Indian police and Indian intelligence agencies. So it is certainly not the religion that produces violent tendencies. It is the economic situation. Neighboring Pakistan, the hub of Madrassas, is twice as poor as India. The Arab countries do not have a good education system. They let the ethics of the bedouin lifestyle to dominate them. In such a lifestyle, might is right. That should explain the monarchies that are in place and it is unlike the British monarchy where it is a figurehead.

But surely, it is not the Islam religion.

Chuck. Good article, Last paragraph ......" So if you take anything away from this series, I hope it's this: The war of ideas among Arabs and Muslims can only be fought and won by their own forces of moderation, and those forces can only emerge from a growing middle class with a sense of dignity and hope for the future. Young people who grow up in a context of real economic opportunity, basic rule of law and the right to speak and write what they please don't usually want to blow up the world. They want to be part of it. "......

IMO islam must change but I think also that they need to be presented with reasons for change and a way to accomplish change.

Does the removing of sadam show a way of change to Iraq and muslims. Will this convince muslims that there is hope for freedom.

From the article...." So what to do? A lot of help can and should come from Europe. Although America is often the target, Europe has been the real factory of Arab-Muslim rage.".....

Not sure I can agree with this, how or why should Europe or any other more advanced country be blamed for the failure of islam to keep pace with the rest of the world especially with the billions upon billions of dollars from oil sales that could have been used for proper education, infrastructure.. IMO if there is blame to be placed it should be placed on the failure of islam to keep pace with the rest of the world.

IMO many in our societies to day like to blame the winners for their own failures...just the way it is I guess.

Some times the winners end up having to take drastic actions to get others to understand their own failures.

Another excellent article by Friedman....

It just makes me wonder though... Why do so many people find my opinions so extreme when I essentially agree with 90% of Friedman's analysis and recommendations??

Is Friedman a reactionary extremist?

Or is it merely that some of my less favorite antagonists are marxist and socialist extremists?

Or is it that they just hate Bush so much that they can't see the forest for the trees??

Whatever the case, it's too bad... Because my views transend the Bush administration. They have to because this battle is going to take years...

We have an entire region to modernize and moderate...

And hopefully we're not giving the Arabs the rope with which they will eventually hang us sometime in the future..
