The Red scares of the 30's caused the Democrats to usurp the planks of the American Communist Party which had as many as 30 MILLION supporters in 1930's. Sometimes fear is a good thing as it causes people to move.

When Grandma has her first anal probe because of Patriot Act XII maybe people will realize their civil rights are gone. At that point, it may be too late because your food will contain "magic glitter", the successor to RFID, and you can be tracked anywhere on the planet.

Mc Carthyism is good

There was some hysteria at the time of the Watts riots- at least in the white community- I know because I remember hearing a bit of it, even though I was just a child. And the hysteria surrounding the Rodney King case is a small example- it wasn't nation wide, but it was most certainly mass hysteria.

Actually, duck and cover would probably do, too. Forgot that in my first response. I attended a school two miles from a major military installation that would have been a prime target for Russian nukes. Fat lot of good duck and cover would have done us. But we practiced it every week anyhow.
