People were even sending away for bomb shelter plans at the time

Not only that, they were actually building them in their back yards.

Our hangout was in a friend's bomb shelter. It was in the Los Angeles basin about dead center in the middle of the aerospace community. If the location wasn't so absurd, it would have been funny. Looked pretty good with a fish tank, some posters and some fabric hung from the ceiling. Good place to make out with girls and play cards when the ladies weren't there.

You wonder how much Hearts you could play while waiting for the outside to cool down. Nah, I'm thinking vapor would be a better way to free my spirit after the Big 'Un than to spend eternity in a hole. There was a big steel hatch. I wonder how you get out if there is a blast and a car is sitting on top of the hatch? I guess you don't.

<<seemingly intelligent people can become whipped into hysteria by this kind of crap.>>

Yes, me too. LOL. I love this discussion about the Cold War hysterics. Too bad it was politically motivated and nothing more -- with, naturally, Prescott Bush making even more money on the "phenomenon."

And I think you're absolutely right about the more intelligent choosing not to bring children into this world/country.

Although I've seen many in my boomer demographic doing so for the past 25 years. Those Leave It to Beaver bomb shelters/practices in the halls of the elementary schools left impressions...which were compounded by the Republicans whenever they ruled from ultimate seat of power in the White House from then on.

Corporations have been very very tough on my generation -- from the get go when many of us graduated college in the '70s. Seems to be getting much, much worse under Republican "leadership."
