Hm, Noel, why don't we try this in reverse.

You tell me something, which I believe to be untrue. I reply,

a) "You are mistaken, that is not true"

b) "That is false and you're a liar!"

Does a) = b)? Try to imagine it on the receiving end and I think you will see that it does not.

People can and do say untrue things all the time out of mistaken belief or ignorance. Once you call someone a liar, you have moved beyond evaluation of content to accusations of intent to deceive.
