My attitude towards the U.N. is "piss on them."

Neither the U.S. nor any other sovereign nation is bound by U.N. mandates (if it were otherwise, then such nations could not truly be said to be "sovereign").

Same goes for the concept of "international law." The U.S. and any other nation is perfectly free to back out of an agreement if it turns out the agreement is not in the nation's best interest.

To me, the only question to be answered before attacking another nation is: "Does the nation pose a serious threat to the U.S.?"
