I'd prefer to see a move towards direct elections and the use of technology such as the internet. If we can do our banking online, I don't see why we can't do our voting online. I'd like to see more money spent on this. I thought this would happen after 2000. It seems that we let Diebold run away with contracts and their security has apparently been atrocious. There have been several pieces written on this. Apparently, their first machines were easily defeated.

I understand your post and the historical basis. Yet, it leaves a bad taste in the electorate when someone wins the popular vote and yet wins by virtue of the Electoral College. We need to encourage voting. The biggest problem I see is that we have such an abysmally low voter turnout. Apathy is fed by those who feel that their vote does not make a difference, ironic given the 2000 election.
