The new format appears to be motivated by card manufacturers who have to pay royalties to SNDK for its SD or miniSD cards. I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung were involved. At this point, with so many other formats accepted in one way or another, one might wonder whether one more format really makes a difference. On the other hand, unless the new card were designed so that it could be used with an adaptor for compact flash, for example, it would be difficult to integrate into existing equipment such as printers (home as well as commercial).
