Ted, The bulk of the increase is going for the war, homeland security and GOP pork.

Do the math. The war itself is what, $56B, $75B, $87B?

Eighty seven initially and then another $50 billion later in the year.......or a total of $137 billion. Then there is the increased spending for defense and homeland security.

That's less than 20% of the $500B budget deficit. Overall defense spending is going up by 7%, i.e. $30B. That's another 6%. What is accounting for the rest? GOP pork? Pork on both sides of the fence is amounting to $23B. (http://www.detnews.com/2004/politics/0401/16/a01-37672.htm)

Let's try this again......137 billion for the war, $50 billion yearly increase for Medicare/prescription drug...that's $187 billion. Using your math, $30 billion for defense....that's $207 billion. Twenty three billion for pork.......that $240. How much for Homeland Security and the war on terrorism......$10 billion. That brings us to $240 billion.

I am sure there is some miscellaneous increases we have not accounted for but I bet you the next major hole is the loss of revenue due to the recession and Bush's TAX CUTS.

And you wonder why I am unhappy with Bush. We enter a recession and so he starts a war and increases spending and then turns around and gives the rich a tax cut. Is that a plan, or what? Really! How stupid can this get?

Ten,

re: Do the math. The war itself is what, $56B, $75B, $87B? That's less than 20% of the $500B budget deficit.

The war spending bill comes later, after the election, and is not included in this budget. Don't ask me why or ask me for a link, I heard it on CBS news this evening (and those that choose not to believe CBS it's OK with me, don't shoot the quoter).

I think you'll find it's not social programs, it is pork. Things like a golf appreciation program for St. Augustine, Florida are being funded. And if you care for the environment, the EPA is being cut. Agriculture is being cut.

Frankly, I don't think this budget will fly in Congress. I think the fiscal backlash is finally starting. Probably too little too late.

George VISA Bush, the credit card President.

Ten, I posted the government's budget sometime around 2000 or 2001. From memory, 1/3 was Defense, 1/3 was HHS stuff.

Basically, Department of Defense and SS.

Everything else was smaller than these two.

Regards,
Amy J PS The war cost at least $100B. The Internet boom was fueled by $100B in venture capital, as a comparison.
