I know an Indian that came to Silicon Valley as an IT consultant and he paid taxes, so am confused by your statement, but maybe something has changed. Also, vaguely recall some people saying taxes can be as high as 80% in India (this is from memory, so the number may be wrong). India's high tax rate is apparently why India has a black market. The article says India is giving a tax break for non-core income tax. Maybe their taxes aren't 80% but are now 25% with some tax break. Don't know. RE: "Hiring offshore workers shifts the capex market offshore, we have seen this with Intel and their shrinking ASPs." Intel's ASP has risen over the past three quarters due to the success of Centrino. On an unrelated note, you once said companies need to be realistic about what is affordable for international buyers. ASPs will probably fall for any corporation, as overseas markets grow and billions of international consumers enter the market. But the sum is enormous. RE: " Sure Intel gets a one time benefit of a cheap worker, but we as a nation lose our expensive long term investment in IP. Is that wise?" IP theft is a risk. Motorola had their IP stolen in China. Only chipsets are done in China. Intel got to China very early, around 1990. This is why Intel is succeeding in China. It's also why Microsoft is struggling in China - Microsoft entered China much later. I read Barrett was in the Middle East a few weeks ago. Maybe that's the next emerging market ten years from now. RE: "Maybe for Carly Fiorina and her quarter by quarter perspective but not for the US technology industry as a whole, it seems to me. Juniper networks might be an american company, but I can almost guarantee you the next Juniper will be indian, unless Juniper R&D gets moved back to the US." See what you mean here. The synergy that's created when I bump into a Cisco engineer is incredibly helpful for both. I never bump into a Juniper engineer. On the other hand, I'm bumping into biotech engineers and just signed a biotech contract. RE: "congress could very easily say that tech products that are sold here have to be engineered here, in the US, similar to the laws they use for japanese car imports." Do you know for sure if they do this? I didn't know that. I'll have to ask my Dad. Do you mean, Toyota has to design their cars here if they want to sell them here? I know Toyota has manufacturing in the USA. Their average worker is 35, while C's average worker is 45. PlayStation division is in S California, but am now wondering if this is due to USA laws?
