I don't see why there should be such a large distinction between killing civilians and killing soldiers.

Russia lost millions of soldiers in WWII, all of them were fighting under threat of summary execution, how is the death of a civilian any worse?

I am not alone in finding the annihilation of two civilian cities rather atrocious

War itself is atrocious, as anyone who has been involved in one well knows.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was atrocious. The Japanese invasion of China and its treatment of Chinese women was atrocious. The buzz bombing of London was atrocious. The firebombing of Dresden was atrocious. That is what happens when human lust for power overcomes human decency.

Since I have relatives who would likely have died if the invasion of the Japanese mainland had been the only way to end the war, I am grateful that Truman had the courage to take what he knew was a terrible step on order to save many, many American and Japanese lives.

I am fairly certain that I would not participate nor condone any mass killing of civilians - this, by the way, happens to be a classic "crime against humanity" as per its definition post-WWII,

Was interested in how you would answer the question and where you would take it. Now I know. Thanks. BTW, do you consider yourself a pacifist? Now, don't go ballistic at the question. <g> Some of your prior posts suggest to me that you might be against any and all wars. Just curious.
