I'm surprised that some people still use old stereotypes...

Do you realize how many Asian students are in our graduate schools learning science and engineering? I'll guess that at least 50% of the PhD candidates are Asian. Ask some grad students in science and eng. how many of their grad teaching assistants are Asian... The disproportionate numbers also carry through to the top R&D labs in the country. IBM's Watson Research Lab is at least 60% Asian(very few are Japanese) and the company recently announced the transfer of 4000 software jobs to India. Why are there so few American kids going for science and eng. PhDs????

Re: Creativity...... A good measure of creativity is the number of patents issued to a company. For the year 2003..it kinda belies the Japanese stereotype, doesn't it?

See this link, for example.

re: Creativity is having the capability to think outside the box, to look at the world in a new and a different light, and not going down the well trodden path. Creativity involves challenging the status quo, questioning conventional wisdom etc.

even that can be interpreted in many ways.....
