I have never seen a cast of characters that was black and white. That's simply not what humans are. But do I think the Palestinians are more black in this case? Yes, I do. They have been offered peace, and their own land, on many occasions. President Clinton got Israel to make almost astonishing concessions. Arafat said no. What he was offered may not have been perfect, but it was more than reasonable. He said no. The fact which you seem to find easy to overlook is that Hamas and other groups have made crystal clear that they do not want peace with Israel. They want Israel gone, period. End of discussion. Nothing less. They will continue to commit terrorist acts until Israel is totally gone. Israel has accepted the principle of two nations, that the Palestinians should have their own nation, but that it must respect Israel's right to exist. Whatever the problems of details may be, they have accepted that principle -- the right of the Palenistian people to exist and to have their own state. The Palenstinians have NOT accepted the same for Israel. They want to destroy Israel totally, and to have it all for themselves. I find that, personally, an unacceptable position in the context of international relations. If you had a neighbor who was shooting at your wife and children (if you have any) and was not going to stop shooting until they were all dead, and you lived in a neighborhood where there were no police (there are no international police, you know), would you just sit back and twiddle your thumbs until they were all dead? If you say yes, I frankly don't believe you . Yes, Israel has done some things they should not have done. I have never painted them as all white. But when you are fighting an enemy whose sole goal is your total destruction, and whose weapon of choice is to kill as many totally innocent people as they can in as brutal a way as they can (packing bombs with screws and bolts to tear flesh as efficiently as possible), then frankly I am willing to forgive quite a bit in the course of fighting that enemy.
