I saw an excerpt from an old interview where he basically said he didn't want to go to Canada so he joined the guard. Edit: Here it is: thenation.com Yet in 1994, he had remarked, "I was not prepared to shoot my eardrum out with a shotgun in order to get a deferment. Not was I willing to go to Canada. So I chose to better myself by learning how to fly airplanes."

This was not an issue for many democrats back then and Clinton did lie. Kerry defended Clinton in 92 and when asked about the Bush AWOL story he said " he didn't know the details" and he respected people's decisions about how to serve. I have tremendous respect for Kerry and his service and wish him well. It looks like we'll have a bonesman in the White House either way -g- ho ho ho
