Ted Re..That's impossible.......the Taliban didn't come into power until the early 90s, maybe the late 80s.
Really

Yeah, really!

The modern day Taliban didn't drive the Russians out of anywhere. Here is your original post and my answer.

A losing gambit? Just like the Taliban's tactics were a losing proposition against Russia; like the Viet Cong attacks were a losing gambit against the US? Its these "losing gambits" that tend to bring goliaths to their knees.

The Taliban probably never wuld have ousted the Russians, if Carter hadn't ordered the CIA to help them with tactics and supplied weapons, especially Stinger missiles.

You will notice, in your opening statement, you said the Just like the Taliban's tactics were a losing proposition against Russia; If you want to get technical, the Taliban didn't have anything to do with driving the Russians out of Afghanistn. as the later day Taliban weren't formed until 1994, according to your article; 5 yrs, after Russia withdrew from Afghanistan. Mullah Omar however, was a commander in several of the main groups, along with OBL and the Norther Alliance, and several others, which combined to drive the Russians out. It is these groups I assumed you were talking about. These groups got help originally from Carter, and the help continued through the Reagon, and half of Bush seniors administration.

Mullah Muhammad Omar Mujahed

Thirty-nine years ago, a child was born to a member of a noble family of Islamic scholars and teachers in Kandahar. The child’s father, Maulvi Ghulam Nabi Akhund, held this child to be very precious - for he had seen the deaths of his three older daughters. The child was named Muhammad Omar Mujahed, later to be called Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen Mullah Omar. Allah blessed him with another younger brother, but he too, like his elder sisters, died in early childhood, leaving Muhammad Omar to be the only child of his parents.

As Allah had willed it, Omar’s noble father died when Omar was only three years old, thus leaving him an orphan and his mother a widow. However, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'la took care of them and guided Omar’s uncle (father’s brother), Maulvi Muhammad Anwar, to marry Omar’s mother. Allah blessed them with three more boys and four girls, all of whom are alive and involved in fighting the enemies of Allah. Thus, Mullah Omar grew up in the care of his uncle/step-father and mother in a purely religious environment. He understood Islamic studies as was the tradition in his family for generations. He was completing his study of the highest level book of Hanafi fiqh, “Hidayah” at the time when the Communists also were gaining strength in Afghanistan.. This forced Mullah Omar and many members of his noble family, to close their books and direct their energies towards countering the emerging Soviet menace. This was the year 1978, and Mullah Omar was a young teenager -- his beard had not even appeared. Yet he was keen and dedicated to the cause of Islam and worked untiringly along with his uncles, peers, and other teachers in fighting against the Soviets. From this point on, Mullah Omar was in Jihad constantly until the Soviets left Afghanistan. Mullah Omar had commanded various groups of Mujahideen during this Jihad, and was known for his valor and courage. However, he was not famous as a major commander.

Throughout the jihad, he never left the battlefield, except on three occasions when he was injured - in two of which, he was critically injured. He had his body riddled with machine-gun bullets, and lost an eye - but Allah caused him to recover and return to battle. Once the Soviets left, Mullah Omar, like many other sincere fighters, returned to his madrassa and books. However, when the former Mujahideen commanders started wreaking havoc on the streets of Afghanistan to the point where there was no safety of anything left for the people, Mullah Omar and a handful of his students once again picked up the rifle and embarked on a Jihad to liberate the people of Afghanistan from this anarchy and establish law and order in the form of the Islamic Shariah.

Mullah Omar’s pure life and great achievements to date have made him worthy of the title “Omar the Third” after Omar bin Khattab, and Omar bin Abdul Aziz. May Allah strengthen his resolve, be his Protector and Helper and guide him always on the straight path (aameen
