if that thesis is irrelevant to today's practical methodologies, whatever the discipline, then it is a waste of time imho. The independent research skills might be worthwhile in a general sense but the time spent on the thesis itself, more often than not, cannot be applied directly in one's profession. There aren't too many corporate opportunities for PhDs that I know of in Silicon Valley. The national laboratories like Livermore are always looking for PhDs, but again that is pure research.
