It took the world hundreds of years and bloody wars to get to the stage to agree on certain humanities and rules during war. It is sad to see us go back to square one on some of them.

That's actually the most pathetic aspect of this whole mess -- it just illustrates how rapidly mankind can slip back into the morass that it was supposedly crawling away from over the past 30 or so years... Rather a depressing thought.

Back when all of this was heating up, I said to several friends, "Where are the statesman?" IMO, we're living in a time when true statesmean with vision are strangely absent. There are some, but their voices have been drowned out by the sabre-rattlers. Again, it's a pretty depressing thought and one which doesn't promise too much for the future of the world as we know (knew) it.

What do you think will happen to the next couple of American soldiers captured on hostile ground? Do you think they will get POW status?

We don't have to wonder. We already had American soldiers captured during the recent war. Though I think some were mistreated, they generally did have POW status as they should have.

But the Guantanamo detainees are not soldiers of another state at war with us.

We did, however, treat captured Iraqi soldiers in the recent war as POW's and that was correct. Even Saddam is considered a POW by Americans.
