Wearing of imitation police uniforms becomes serious problem

BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Sun Guoying, a resident of Beijing's Haidian District, was surprised to see a person collecting bicycle parking fees wearing a uniform similar to that of the police.

"Is it proper for this person to wear such a uniform that symbolizes state power?" he asked.

It's become a common query as Chinese see more "officials", including hotel guards, cigarette sales inspectors, environment protection inspectors, toll road fee collectors and workers in power companies wear police-like uniforms.

Since 1986, the State Council, China's central government, has repeatedly made it clear that only the State Council has the rightto authorize the use of governmental uniforms, and other government departments or local authorities have no such right.
