If Kerry gets an Indiana, Arizona or Florida he doesn't need anything in the deep south so why waste his money there? Same logic that Bush won't try very hard in the northeast of west coast.

If he were to pick a running mate from the south maybe he could grab one of them. Otherwise, I would see him going for Bill Richardson or Evan Bayh. Ohio is in play this year, as is West Virginia, most must-win states for Bush.

To think about Kerry's southern strategy is a bit premature. Al Gore is from the South and he lost in 2000.

My sense is that after Kerry becomes the nominee, he is going to seek and get the active support of Bill Clinton. And that will be a big factor (positive) in the South. Kerry has already started to mention Clinton's name in Virginia etc. The Clinton economic team such as James Rubin, Robert Reich, Andrea Tyson etc. will swing into action and come up with a plan that the American people to hear about: the economy. That is going to be the cornerstone of the 2004 Presidential elections. And Kerry will ace it.
