Brian, I suspect that as devices get smaller and faster and
new technologies come into vogue(nano technology)that it
won't be necessary to scale up wafer size...just scale down
the devices and you achieve the same production capability.
There is a reason that you don't see 1000 passenger air
planes. LOL...

7-8 B for a fab will not be prohibitive for intel if the payoff is there. I wonder if there will be enough volume demand for such fabs - if intel is the only one buying can it happen?

Don't forget about diversification.

There are reasons beyond placing factories near customers for spreading them around geographically. Natural disaster, man made disaster...

7-8 Billion in assets and a significant percentage of your required production in one location that can go away when some nut in a Ryder truck gets PO'd...
