I don't think GW can win, and I think a lot of powerful republican congresspeople are going to go down on these Mankew economic theories that don't work in practice and "give away the farm" wrt the US economy. Thats why they were screaming for Mankew's resignation this week, because they know their days are numbered. It is bold to call for a white house appointment to be fired. Lou Dobbs is going to continue to hammer this issue all year. Republicans can't escape it, which in a way is too bad for some of the moderate guys like Specter.

A republican congressman from a safe republican district in CA (Drier) was on CNBC lately touting the household employment index. If he weren't in a safe district, this would be his funeral imho.
