Ethanol

There may be other reasons to dislike ethanol but I'm not sure the negative energy argument is still viable.

The study I saw said it provides 39% more energy than it takes to produce it. That includes planting, harvesting, hauling, chemicals, fertilizer ...

The + or - on the energy isn't really the point. A vehicle running on 10% ethanol only produces 40% of the pollution that a car running on straight gas produces. Same with soy diesel. Using soy oil in diesel allows them to eliminate the sulphur in the diesel. That's the sulphur that causes acid rain.
