I don't think it takes a genius to make the connections.

It takes leaping ability, not genius, to attribute family instability or lifetime lack of trust to a child who never learns of his parents' outside activities or who learns of them in a context that doesn't breed distrust. Sure, indiscretion coupled with bad luck can lead to tragic consequences, but the dalliance itself is not inevitably catastrophic. That's simply an overstatement.
