What kind of "substance" is required before reporting that, say, one Presidential candidate is stating, "off the record," that another Presidential candidate has a problem stemming from a relationship with an intern?

Clark is alleged to have said this about Kerry one day, and endorsed him the next.

I, for one, think this has a great weight against Clark's credibility. I have no idependent knowledge as to whether Kerry has an intern problem or whether that's fabricated out of whole cloth.

Given that the Democrat mantra is "Bush knew", doesn't it seem relevant to judge what "Clark knew" or "Dean knew"? How well do they do in separating fact from fiction?

It's generally a bad thing to promote, publicize and lend credibility to unsubstantiated rumors.

The other problem is the collateral damage. I'd like to know how the story developed, too. I find the journalistic ethics and bias aspects of this interesting as well as political dirty tricks. But if the story isn't true and there's an investigation, Polier will be further harmed. If the story is true, then she's fair game, but if she did nothing, then it would be wrong to monica her. The other problem is that, if untrue, this has already taken up way too much of the public's attention.

If legitimate media continue a discrete investigation, if such a thing is possible, I think that would be beneficial.
