In the REAL world, it's rare that two people can ever totally agree on anything unless they have "deciple" personalities and give up thinking for themselves. I can be partially "for you" and partially "against you." I can agree with your goals and disagree with your means for achieving those goals. I can believe in freedom, democracy and basic human rights and place limits on how far I will go to support a government that erodes those freedoms, that democracy and those human rights. I can look critically at press releases from our government and our military and conclude that I am being lied to BY MY OWN GOVERNMENT. I can look at short term solutions that cause long term crisis and conclude that near sighted thinking is a BAD approach to long term problems. I can even disagree with a majority of Americans and believe that I am right and they are wrong. In short, I can, and will, think for myself. When I think America is right I will say so. When I think America is wrong, I will say so. I will do that because I'm for you if you advance the principles that have made this nation a shining beacon of hope in a history of nations that fell far short of America's promise. I'm against you if you erode those principles out of fear, ignorance or because they impede personal goals of religion or economic gain for ideologues. In the final analysis, America is more of an idea than a piece of land. We should all remember that the principles of our founding fathers could have taken hold anywhere. If those principles are eroded, then all we have left is the land. I, for one, have the greatest allegiance to the principles, not the real estate.
