The "fact" of Kerry's service is truly important only to the extent that it rebuts some of the attacks that have become favorites of the far-right-wing. You can't say that Kerry is selfish, weak and cowardly when his men stand up and say the guy was tough, courageous, showed amazing coolness and judgement under fire and was willing to sacrifice his life for them. You can't say that the man is a wimp when he was a warrior. You can't say he has no patriotism when he fought and was wounded in the service of his country. You can't say he's a patrician, rich little kid from the East coast who doesn't care about the average person when a lot of "average" people who knew him in the military say he was an officer but cared and acted like "one of the guys." Finally, you CAN say that he truly understands what war means TO THOSE WHO HAVE TO LIVE AND DIE IN IT. That's a big deal because of all the men who surround Bush, the only one I know of that's a real combat veteran is Powell and Powell was "outside" the circle on a lot of issues concerning the war until recently.
