Yes, we had job loss ('turnover') about as high as now, back then. The difference was that new jobs were also being created at the fastest rate measured since the fifties. That's what has changed: the losses are not much higher... but the additions are vastly lower.

Of course, Bush is kicking the can down the road. He doesn't care what happens after he is out of office and the rest of us are left with the huge debt.
