KyrosL, RE: "OT -- the US is doing OK in terms of traffic deaths."

43,000 is a HUGE number of annuals deaths.

We have 36,000 people die every year from flu and so around 78 million people get vaccinated every year to avoid this.

Meanwhile, what are we doing about saving 43,000 lives every year?

It's also impossible for Detroit to create safer and more innovative products when consumers have the attitude 43,000 car deaths each year are no big deal.

And to put this in economic terms, we'd rather spend $43B every year on lost lives, than spend money to get safer cars and safer roads.

Detroit needs another crash-car dummies type of awareness campaign, but for roads and overall car construction, to motivate consumers to solve the problem through a willingness to pay for a solution. Car companies can't fix, what consumers aren't willing to pay.
