"I would assume far more jews liked jesus or were ambivalent about him or didnt know who he was than wanted to kill him."

The New Testament isn't terribly detailed and doesn't go much into cultural anthropology. What we do know is that aside from the Romans, pretty much everyone involved was Jewish (there was one pretty significant character who may not have been, I think it was Simon).

Jesus's disciples were Jewish, followers were Jewish, etc. Both the good people and the bad people were Jewish.

So saying "the Jews killed Christ" is tantamount to saying "the Americans killed Abraham Lincoln." Of course an American killed Lincoln, everybody concerned was American.

Recent ABC poll - a tiny percentage of Americans believe that Jews today are collectively responsible for Christ's death - even a tiny percentage is too much, of course.

All Yes 8% No 80%
Catholics Yes 6% No 82%
Protestants Yes 11% No 78%
Evangelical Protestants Yes 12% No 77%
Non-Evangelical Protestants Yes 12% No 83%
No Religion Yes 3% No 83%

There's some truth to what you say, but have you ever been in a crowd when it starts to get irrational? I have. Someone suggests something and then everyone else gets on the bandwagon. I bet something like that happened when one guy started screaming that Pontius Pilate should crucify Jesus. The bloodlust of the crowd probably went rampant. You know what they say about crowds. One person is reasonable, a crowd is an irrational rabble.
