Under our Constitutional system, rights are not granted, but protected. A subtle but large difference. The Constitution grants no rights; it protects citizens from majority rule legislation that restricts their inalienable rights.

The founding fathers were big on this, because they were fearful of any form of government that 'granted' rights. They believe that God granted these rights, and that no man could restrict those God-given rights.

As time goes on, our realization that these rights were in fact being restricted to certain people has led to amendments, such at the 14th, that clarify the purpose of the Constitution.

But, it is wrong to say that white people 'granted' black people these rights.
