NEW TRIPOLI, Pennsylvania -- Lithographic equipment makers ASML Holding NV and Nikon Corp. were equal first based on revenue in the $3 billion 2003 lithography market, according to The Information Network. Both companies generated revenues from lithography equipment sales of $1.215 billion

Nikon was the winner in 2003 lithography market based on unit shipments with 177 of the 383 tools shipped (46.2 percent) to ASML's 126 tools (32.9 percent)

"The mix of tool sold plays a big factor in rankings," said Robert Castellano, president of The Information Network, in a statement. "DUV tools at 193-nm can be priced as much as five times that of an I-line tool. Exchange rates also play a role; the top three suppliers are foreign based."

Tools that operate at the 193-nm wavelength took 15.1 percent of the 2003 market, and although Nikon had a 50 percent share of the advanced 193-nm ArF sector based on units, ASML's Twinscan equipment sells for a higher price.
