"On the other side, there are those who think that the worldview and behavior of terrorists is at least a somewhat rational response to our alleged sins, like neocolonialism. Thus, it is our fault for driving them to despair, and it is wrong for us to defend ourselves, because we will only exacerbate their fury, which would, of course, eventually disappear were we to be accommodating, and eager to answer their outrages with appeasement."

Other than Noam Chomsky, can you show us that anyone actually thinks that?

Otherwise, I believe you have constructed a straw man argument. I doubt many Americans think it is wrong for us to defend ourselves.

Hi neocon; Re: "One of the great divides on this thread is between those ... On the other side, there are those who think ..."

This was a very simplistic argument. It reminds me of much of the neocon logic in that it is a very simplistic, black and white analysis of what is in fact, a very complicated reality. You might as well argue that "there are two types of people in the world, bitches and sons of bitches". You may get a laugh, but you don't get anywhere.

In my view, all those nutcases you listed in the first part of your "great divide" have "somewhat rational responses" to the actions of the US government. In fact, I think that all humans are "somewhat rational", even the ones that were convinced by the obviously bogus "proofs" that WMDs existed.

My complaint about neocon policy is not that it fails to address "root causes". I really don't care whether or not the Palestinians or Iraqis achieve statehood or freedom or whatever. I just want my own nation to be free and happy. Neocon foreign policy doesn't appear to be even directed with this as its main goal, but instead appears to be directed to ensure the survival of Israel. Certainly the Neocons have made zero progress at making the world safer for Americans.

Now the problem with neocon logic is that they fail to understand root causes, but that isn't why I reject their policies. I reject their policies because they are loser policies. If they had bogus reasons for their policies, but their policies worked, I'd be all for it.
