Now, maybe the President does support an actual, active "ban" on gay marriages, but that's not what his announcement -- which was the source for the news story -- included yesterday.

There have been a couple of proposals raised in Congress with different approaches to an amendment. There have been reports that Bush favors this one or that one. They are different, but they all preclude same sex marriages.
allowing only male/female marriages has a slightly different tonal quality than banning same-sex marriage, but there is no practical difference. No, he didn't say "ban" in his speech. He framed in positively. But he stated the reason he was jumping in was to prevent the gay marriages going on in two states. So it seems to me one could report it either way. He said both.
