I won't drag the hairsplitting out --that settles it: The US currently obtains about 15.3% of its crude oil imports from West Africa and Africa as a whole has proven reserves of about 80 billion barrels of oil. Most of that oil comes from West Africa. Both exports of African oil to the US and African proven reserves are increasing. By the year 2020 Africa should provide 17% or more of crude oil imports to the US, or about 770 million barrels or more a day. These projections could easily be exceeded given the dramatic increase in offshore oil exploration and production underway in West Africa. rigzone.com

From the initial exploration efforts by Royal/Dutch Shell in 1937 up until 1993, all oil activity in the country was restricted to land and shallow waters close to communities in the Niger Delta in the south.
