Chip

Is there any historical evidence besides the new testament(which is highly suspicious) that he even existed ?

This film is only Mel Gibson's version of the story... it's already not accurate, and as you just pointed out, no one knows what really happened back then... the first technical error is that nails were not placed through the palms, but between the ulna and the radius just above the wrist... if nails were placed through the hands, as they were only very early in the period when crucifixions were prevalent, then the weight of the body pulled the hands off the nails and the body fell off the cross... this is only one simple example of the inaccuracy of the film, so I think that anyone who would declare this film to be anything more than mere entertainment is overstatng the picture and the purpose of the film... there is little doubt this film will be great entertainment and even inspiration to a segment of the movie going audience, but I don't think it will ever become a great epoch, i.e., Gone With The Wind or even The Ten Commandments...
