New California poll great news for Kerry, bad for Bush, Edwards. California Poll: Kerry 60 Pct, Edwards 19 Pct Wed Feb 25, 6:02 AM ET Add Politics - Reuters to My Yahoo! SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) has a 60 percent to 19 percent lead in California over his closest Democratic rival, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites), according to a poll released on Wednesday. The most populous U.S. state holds its presidential primary next week, one of 10 states taking part in Super Tuesday. A Field Poll of 958 registered voters also found that 53 percent of California voters would back Kerry in a match-up against President Bush (news - web sites), with 41 percent backing the incumbent. Bush's approval rating in the state had sunk to 43 percent, down from 52 percent a month before and the lowest level since before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites). "Over the past month Californians' assessment of the job performance rating of Republican President Bush has declined markedly," pollsters Mark DiCamillo and Mervin Field wrote. "The president's decline in positive assessments is most pronounced among Democrats." The Field poll of a small subset of 497 Democratic voters from Feb. 18-22 found that Kerry's support had jumped to 60 percent from just 7 percent a month before in California. That sample had a 4.5 percent margin or error, and the questions on Bush's popularity a 3.3 percent margin of error. An Los Angeles Times poll published on Tuesday found Kerry leading Edwards 56 percent to 24 percent.
