They used Saddam to go after Iran.

Its a stretch to say they used Saddam for anything. Saddam was calling the shots.

But for the sake of argument lets say the Gulf states opinion was more important then Saddam and their reasons were 100% religious. Why should we want a Persian Gulf dominated by Iran? We had similar interests with the Gulf states at the time even if we had different motivations.


Tim, I am having a hard time following your thinking. Do you think that the Gulf States were anticipating what Iran would be like 10-20 years down the road? In 1980, Iran was in no shape to fight Kuwait let along Iraq. In fact, there were a couple of times where they almost went down to defeat. At one point, Saddam was able to get a couple of hundred miles inside their borders and occupy their land. Later, Iran was forced to send in 14-15 year olds to fight on the front line. Iran was by no means a superpower in the '80s.

So about what were the Gulf States so worried.....if it wasn't religion?
