New 6-inch fab to be built in Ningbo, China

Shanghai staff writer; Jack Lu, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 26 February 2004]

According to sources, a new 6-inch fab, Ningbo Chong-Xi Semiconductor (transliterated from Chinese), is slated to begin construction in April in the Ningbo Free Trade Zone (NFTZ) in China’s Southern Yangtze River Delta.

Ninbo Chong-Xi will produce power management (PWM) ICs using a high-voltage 0.35-micron process. Actual schedule for initial production is unknown. The fab’s registered capital is US$100 million. Actual investment will amount to US$160 million, sources said.

According to sources, Carpentaria Company, a Hong Kong-based subsidiary of Taiwan’s transistor vendor Hi-Sincerity Microelectronics Corporation (HSMC), will fund Ninbo Chong-Xi. US-based Advanced EPI Technology, a silicon epitaxial wafer foundry, will be listed as the fab’s official foreign investor.
