According to Tai, the figure is expected to top NT$300 billion for 2004 amid promising business prospects. The administration also hopes to see 100 additional companies open up shops in the park, with a further 10,000 workers newly recruited for the year, he added. The park's sales hit around NT$50.1 billion in 2001 and rose to NT$103.1 billion in 2002, with opto-electronics and semiconductor companies being the major driving force, administration tallies show. Currently, 127 hi-tech companies - up by 34 over the 2002 number - have been approved to operate in the park, with promised investment totaling NT$1.3 trillion. Thirty-one companies each are in the opto-electronics and precision instrument industries, while 25 and 22 are from the biotechnology and the semiconductor industries, respectively. A total of 55 companies have started mass operations, while 19 are preparing to do so. The park's imports and exports totaled NT$239.98 billion in 2003, with outbound shipments worth about NT$123.28 billion and inbound shipments worth NT$116.7 billion. The number of workers employed by companies based in the park stood at 21,374 as of the end of last year, up from the previous year's level of 15,071. The numbers registered for the end of 2001 and of 2000 were 9,467 and 6,906, respectively. (CNA)
