"Kill Bill 1," which I thought was pretty lousy, was incredibly violent and admittedly lacked any real story, but the critics loved it.

They said the violence was acceptable as an exercise in style.

I think it's richly ironic that the film critics who say that the movie is too violent are on record for loving Quentin Tarantino and "The Gladiator."

Hardly fair as a blanket statement. I recall that David Edelstein, who just called The Passion "The Jesus Chain Saw Massacre", also called Gladiator "a bloody porridge".
