UPDATE - Alnylam Pharmaceuticals files with SEC to go public

WASHINGTON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Biopharmaceutical firm Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (News - Websites) on Friday a proposed initial public offering valued at up to $86.3 million.

The company, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, did not specify how many shares it planned to offer in the IPO, or set a price range for the sale. This information is expected in future filings with the SEC.

Net proceeds are to be used for product development, working capital, capital expenditures, the acquisition, licensing and protection of intellectual property acquisition, and for corporate purposes, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals said.

Banc of America Securities (News - Websites) , Citigroup, Piper Jaffray and ThinkEquity Partners were listed as underwriters in the firm's preliminary prospectus filing.

Alnylam Pharmaceuticals said it has applied to list on the Nasdaq stock market under the symbol "ALNY" (Nasdaq:ALNY - News).
