Report: Osama bin Laden captured along Afghanistan-Pakistan border

By Yossi Melman, Haaretz Correspondent and AP

Osama bin Laden has been captured along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, according to a report Saturday on Tehran Radio.

In the report quoting "knowledgeable sources," the official Iranian media outlet does not specify when the al-Qaida leader was captured, and the report has yet to be confirmed elsewhere.

It said that Bin Laden was apprehended in a region populated by tribes along the border of the two countries, adding that U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld visit to Pakistan on Thursday was related to capturing the al-Qaida leader.

Bin Laden has been the target of a massive manhunt by the United States since the September 11, 2000 attacks in which two hijacked airplanes slammed into the World Trade Center in New York, causing it to collapse, while another plane hit the Pentagon, and a fourth apparently crashed in a field when passengers resisted the militants. Thousands were killed in the attacks.

I think your opinion would be better served wrt Kerry's protest of the Viet Nam war if you allowed that not ALL Viet Nam war veterans are upset with Kerry.

Indeed, and you surely are aware of this, there are Viet Nam vets who fought every bit as bravely as you did and who changed their minds about the war after they arrived home.

If by some strange circumstance, you have never had contact with any of these men, PM me and I'll put you in touch.

I'm almost through on this subject. I have to go write a check for Kerry now, a thing it had never occurred to me to do. He may not win, but this is my protest against something that disgusts me.

I know Purple Hearts are for wounds and not heroism.

They show that he was serving where the shrapnel was flying, and no one denies that his unit was an exceedingly high death-rate one.

The silver and bronze medals are for heroism. I dare say you will find people to say they weren't.

He left as soon as he could, and came home and fought to end the war.

Before he left, he got safer assignments for his men.

Kerry's early departure meant that he was leaving behind a crew that had suffered through many bloody battles with him. Worried that crew members would be killed, he arranged for them to receive a safer assignment. When one crew member, Medeiros, tried to stay, Kerry "came and talked to me and said, `I really would like you to go. ... I'd like to know you are safe, or safer."'
