To those who firmly believe that the US is lily-white in its human rights record, is always righteous in all its policies and dealings with other countries, the views of the Chinese may come as a very bad joke or may simply be condemned and consigned to limbo. To others, the Chinese perceptions may come as an eye-opener and as a breath of fresh air...................China attacks US rights record BEIJING - China yesterday published a scathing attack on the human rights situation in the United States, in retaliation against a similar report issued by Washington last week that accused Beijing of backsliding on its rights record. Only days after slamming the US report as 'interference in its internal affairs', the State Council, China's Cabinet, countered with its own criticism. Allegations of US atrocities in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan led the way. 'Since the US initiated the war on Iraq, 16,000 Iraqis have been killed, including 10,000 citizens,' the report said. With a US$400 billion (S$684 billion) budget, America's defence spending is more than the rest of the world's combined, and it is the biggest seller of arms. Rights violations were not restricted to the 364,000 US soldiers based in more than 130 countries, the report said, but also occurred at home where the US is one of the world's most violent places. 'The US leads the world in gun ownership, guns are everywhere and crimes involving guns are on the rise,' it said. The report also blasted the US Patriot Act which empowers the government to violate the rights and freedoms of citizens, most notably minorities, 'in the name of national security and fighting terrorism'. The report further slammed American democracy as the politics of the rich and cited the US$113 million spent by President George W. Bush's election campaign in 2000 and the projected US$200 million for this year's presidential poll. It also blasted the US social welfare network and cited the growing numbers of poor and homeless people. 'The richest 1 per cent of the US have wealth that is equal to the 40 per cent of the poorest people in the country,' it said. On Thursday, China expressed 'indignation' at the annual US State Department report which accused Beijing of letting its human rights record slip as arrests of democracy activists and extrajudicial killings continued. -- AFP straitstimes.asia1.com.sg
