COURT ASKED TO PROBE BLAIR ‘WAR CRIMES’

The International Criminal Court has been asked by a group of British lawyers to look into whether Prime Minister Tony Blair should be indicted for war crimes.

In its petition to the court in The Hague, the group, Legal Action Against War, has accused Mr Blair of intentionally launching an attack on Iraq, knowing it would cause incidental loss of life or injury to civilians.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and Attorney-General Lord Peter Goldsmith have also been named in the petition.

Lord Goldsmith advised the UK Government on the legality of the war and demands for his advice to be made public have been increasing recently.

Lawyer Michael Mansfield said the consensus of international legal opinion suggests the basis for the war was illegal, as it did not have direct United Nations backing.
