I know it's been posted here before, but how do I disable Windows Messenger in XP pro? I've been getting prompts to update messenger every time I open OE and switch identities to check different email folder. Although it didn't bother me much at first, it's getting on my nerves now.

I've tried the Administrative Tools>Services>Messenger>Stop route but the window is showing it disabled and 'stop' is grayed out, thereby making this fix ineffective. Another fix I found through Google looked to be a little squirrely.

Does anyone remember the post to remove this PITA and can you direct me to it?

Thanks for your help.

Jerry

This is odd. When I use IE I have the problems mentioned.
When using Mozilla everything is fine.

Java vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
JRE Version: 1.4.2
Operating System: Windows XP
OS version: 5.1

There must be some problem with IE that is not recognizing the installed version and is also not letting me install 1.4.3.

I tried switching between Microsoft VM and the sun JVM as mentioned in the 3rd link. Microsoft VM was not a choice. Under the browser setting (In the Java control panel) Microsoft IE was checked and Mozilla wasn’t even though the test with Mozilla worked. That seems odd. Just for the heck of it I unchecked Microsoft IE and will restart and see if that makes a difference.
