Ted & Ten, RE: "Instead, they too prefer to stay away from those whom they disagree strongly with."

It's one thing to boycott an organization to make a point. But it's another thing to avoid individuals who think differently. You both give the appearance of the later, when Ted said something about avoiding S Baptists and then your statement up above.

I think it's better if people have a wide and diverse collection of friends that think differently.

I have a gun-toting Republican friend that goes completely counter to many of my core values, but we all enjoy hiking together and he does provide different opinions. We respectfully disagree, or we find the humor in it. But I also find it very interesting to see how the rest of the USA perceives things, so to speak. Anytime I want to take a litmus test on how conservative Republicans think, I just ask him. He's really way out there on the right sometimes so it can be quite easy to pull his leg.

RE: "Boycotting Girl Scouts for endorsing SUVs...I still don't see how this applies."

People should boycott on the basis of whether or not an action by a Group violates their value system. Not on the basis of the name of the Group, Party, or Affiliation.

Regards,
Amy J

Ted, Why do they send their kids to the conference if they disagree with its presentation?

They don't. They sent their kids to a Girl Scout troop that endorses the Planned Parenthood conference. There's a degree of separation there, but apparently for those parents, it's not enough.

Actually, we're both wrong.........the Girl Scouts endorse a sex education program prepared by Planned Parenthood that happens to discuss masturbation and homosexuality but does not discuss abortions. Given my recent student teaching experience, I find the stance of the parents laughable.

All I'm saying is that they might not be the kooks and hypocrites you think they are. They could simply be people who believe in something so strongly they're willing to boycott organizations who support the opposing belief. They're not trying to force their beliefs upon anyone else except their children. Instead, they too prefer to stay away from those whom they disagree strongly with.

Oh, I don't think they're kooks and hypocrites. They are exactly as you describe.......strong willed people with strong opinions. They are the people who put the "under God" in the pledge; who want the ten commandments posted in public buildings; who believe separation of church and state
is wrong; who think abortions are an abomination; who condemn violence in film but condone the violence in the Passion; who call liberals unpatriotic; who complain the left is amoral; who consider the two second unveiling of JJ's breast a national travesty; who consider the invasion of Iraq God's will etc.

Oh, I know who they are......they make their opinions and presence well known to the rest of us. I wish they were kooks and hypocrites. The fact that they aren't is what scares the bejezus out of me.
