This is in no way meant to be a critical of Senator Kerry's service; but HE WAS the commanding officer of his boat. If sailors from his boat committed atrocities, they were following Kerry's orders, and under his command.

I understand that President Bush indeed did volunteer for active duty in Vietnam (as some pilots from the Texas Air National Guard, apparently did indeed serve in that SE Asia). I have read that there were too many pilots with more experience, ahead of him in line. Learning to, and flying jet fighters is not exactly the safest job in the military.
