People mistrusted the Church at the time its servants were torturing people to death? Well, maybe the movie could tell a little about that. One of the heretics in the could explain it before his or her tongue was torn out. The important thing, I think, would be to get the details of the myriad tortures depicted at length, close up, in detail, with a lot of blood. The mothers of the "heretics" could be illustrated watching the torture. The Bishops and other priests could also explain about the mistrust, possibly to the mothers.
