China leading the world in mobile growth
Florence Chong
March 9, 2004

ABOUT 300 million Chinese now subscribe to mobile services in China, the largest number of subscribers in the world.

According to a report on China's four largest telecommunications companies by international rating agency Moody's Investors Service, the number of subscribers grew by 80 million last year, on top of 60 million in 2002.

"Growth in the telecom sector has outstripped that of the nation's GDP," the report says.

China's GDP growth in the past decade has averaged 8 per cent annually and Moody's expects mobile telecoms growth to continue at or above the level of GDP for the next three to five years.

The sector has gone through several stages as China Telecom has evolved into three companies and new entrant China Unicom has established itself as a long-term participant.

They are no pushovers, for sure. They are gaining greater respects from the rest of the world. Only majority of Americans are still so very clueless to what is going on. I think the 2008 Olympics will be an eye opening, spiritual awakening, and soul searching period for Americans.

In my brother's church, one guy pilots the SF to Shanghai direct flights once a week. He has spoken glowingly of Shanghai and he also mentioned that one doesn't know what shopping and a marketplace is until one has gone shopping in Shanghai.
